Jesse & Kerry are getting married next summer at the Devonian Gardens. We started their e-session out there and then we drove to Edmonton to hit up a few more hot spots. When I first met Kerry, Jesse wasn't available due to training at his military job. The first thing that struck my about her and her friend Amy that came to meet me is just how much they love to laugh. I knew for sure that Jesse was going to be just as much fun. I can't wait for this wedding next summer. I know it's going to be an amazing time.

Tre & Paola's Wedding

Tre and Paola are good friends of mine. They had a gorgeous wedding at the St. Joseph's Basilica in Edmonton. The church's local claim to fame is that it is the same church that Wayne Gretzky was married in. I know I say I love every couple but I really do mean it and I especially like these guys because we have so many mutual friends.

When I met up with Justin and Vanessa on Saturday I knew almost nothing about them. They were referred to me by Vanessa's cousin Val who designed some of my promo material. I didn't know how they met, or much about what they like to do together. I didn't even see a picture of what they looked like. I felt like I was on a blind date! One that went really really well. We had so much fun I can't even explain it. We stayed out past midnight and they didn't even seem to get tired. What an awesome couple! I love them.

Fred & Mary-cool enough for Vancouver.

This week I visited my cousin Fred in Vancouver and his fab wife Mary. We decided to do a quick set of shots similar to an engagement session even though they're already married. Practice for me and fun for them. Our plan was to start off in Yaletown where they first lived together after they got married and make our way to Gastown but as we went along we had to cut the session short and admit defeat to our appetites. Which is fine because we went to Stephos, home of the deep fried cheese-ball. It was definitely worth the one hour line up outside.

Baby Milo

Milo's mom Janna won a gift certificate for a baby session that I donated to the R.O.M.P.S auction in Leduc to raise funds to build a new playground in the community of Southfork. I'm so glad I got to meet this hip young family. Baby Milo has mad style. I posted a pic of just one pair of his awesome shoes. I feel like blaring The White Stripes as I edit their photos.

Adam and Melanie's families are so funny. I laughed from the very beginning of the day until the end of their beautiful reception. The best man delivered the BEST best man's speech I've ever heard and their MCs were incredible. It was such a joy to shoot this wedding and I can't wait to sit down and start editing more of their pics. For now here is sneak peek for Adam and Mel. Congrats guys!

Robin & Michaela's Wedding

Yesterday I shot Robin & Michaela's wedding at Fort Edmonton Park. It was a perfect day. Since the park isn't open yet to the public this year we had the entire place to ourselves and it was really nice to not have to rush to different locations.

The church was built in 1910 and is completely stunning. I love all the wood in that place. Someday I hope I'll have a home with floors that are as nice as that church's ceilings. Their reception was at the Ukranian Bookstore, also at fort edmonton park and it's got lots of beautiful sunlight spilling in through massive windows. A photographer's dream venue.

Stephen & Karina's awesome e-session

Stephen and Karina are set to get wed this August in Banff. For their e-session we decided to use a metropolitan theme since both of them confessed to loving the city life.

A photographer friend of mine jokes about how the last frames of any shoot are always the best. He was so sure of this trend that back in the days of film he used to start off without any film in his camera because he knew that the last were the keepers. I've found that a lot in my experience too. I don't know if that's because it takes a few moments to get into the groove as a photographer, or if it's because the subjects need time to loosen up or if I'm biased and thinking that I stopped at the perfect time. I don't have all the answers to life but I wanted to start by showing you Stephen and Karina's very last picture. The way they look at each other is so intimate and romantic--oh and Karina really needed to pee so we had to stop.

Victor & Julianne's wedding.

There's more than a few things that are I really found interesting about this couple.

First of all, Victor's a helicopter pilot. I think that's soooo cool. Scary, but cool.

Also, three generations of Victor's wedding were married at the church they used.

And, Julianne smiles a lot every time she see Victor. It's so sweet to see them together.

Julianne's ring is gorgeous. I just had to take a zillion ring pics. Plus, Victor's dad restored two beautiful muscle cars that were used by the bridal party. They served as perfect backdrops for the rings.

Noel & Fatima in Banff.

Earlier this month I spent a weekend in Banff relaxing, enjoying the scenery and scouting locations for Stephen+Karina's wedding this August. I'll put up some pics from their e-session coming up later this month.

The concierge at the hotel I was staying at suggested that I check out the hoodoo trail and while I was there I stumbled upon a very intimate wedding. Actually I can't say I stumbled upon them... I saw a dress and a tux from far away, overheard a few vows, and I decided to go in for a closer look. After the ceremony I introduced myself to Noel & Fatima and volunteered to take a few shots for them pro bono. It felt like a nice thing to do and plus I was super excited to get my creative muscles stretched. Here are a few of my favorites from the set:

Baby Elizabeth

Cheryl received a gift certificate for one of my baby sessions at her baby shower from her awesome sister-in-law Valerie. Valerie is a graphic designer in Leduc that's been helping and consulting me with most of my promo items.

Cheryl's daughter Elizabeth is a such a beautiful baby. Her eyes are almost aquamarine, when she lets you sneak a peek at them! At first I thought she was going to be such a ham, but she got shy so fast.

I love this one of her being shy. Even without seeing either of their faces, there's so much expression in this picture.

Road trip to Banff, AB

I love going on road trips. They're such great photo ops.

The main purpose of my trip was to scout locations for Stephen and Karina's wedding in August. I can't wait to shoot a wedding in Banff. It's such an amazing place.

It's really hard to take a picture while your driving on the highway with a porshe passing you, talking on the phone, changing radio stations and shifting gears, so don't try that at home.

Yesterday I went out for dinner with a fab couple: Robin and Michaela that are getting hitched this May. We went to one of my favorite spots in Edmonton called Dadeos (awesome fries) and twitter came up in conversation. For those of you who don't know what twitter is it's yet another facet of social network that I'm a sucker for. Think of it as a way of hearing about what your friends are up to through a serious of status updates, each being under 140 characters long. It's highly addictive actually as I found out tonight. Andrew & Janice's e-session

I first met Andrew and Janice early last September, over one year before their wedding! Organized and efficient but heaps of fun, these two are just my type of clients. We clicked immediately and I've been looking forward to their engagement session. They wanted to do winter pictures so we decided to go skating and tobogganing. I also incorporated some of my old favorite spots around town.

These two are blissfully in love.

I have to admit, I was really nervous about walking on ice with my camera equipment. Thankfully I didn't fall. Neither did Andrew or Janice. They skate like pros. Right Janice?

Note the matching skates. Now that's attention to detail.

We took these shots at the construction site for the new Art Gallery of Alberta. If you haven't heard about the awesome design yet you can check out the website.

It's easily going to become the coolest building in Alberta. Take that Calgary!!!

We finished up with some tobogganing on one of Edmonton's biggest hills. You should see how fast some of the kids were flying down this place. Nearly warp speed.

Janice and Andrew borrowed a vintage sled. Obviously it wasn't built for two adults but with a little bit of contortion they fit just fine.

Ben Chrisman Workshop

I am so freaking excited about this. One of the world's top photographers, Ben Chrisman from San Francisco, is coming to Edmonton for a workshop that I'm going to be attending. This guy is just genius. His business card should simply display his job position as: Prodigy

It's going to be a lot of fun, a great learning experience, plus a chance for me to meet a lot of like-minded people.

My first destination wedding

I shot Heidi's wedding reception back in September in Lacombe. Heidi's sister Marci raved about my pictures to her friends Alex and Michelle. I'm grateful that she introduced us because Michelle and Alex asked me to photograph their wedding in Cuba this November! That makes this my first official destination wedding, unless you count Lacombe.

I got their save the date card in the mail today and judging by the saucy picture they used I have feeling that a few of their pics are gonna sizzle. We've decided to also do a day after session in beautiful Havana that I'm soooo looking forward to. Stay tuned for pictures of their engagement session and wedding later this year.

Treehugger picture

When I was living in Vancouver I bought an antique twin lens reflex camera called a Yashica Mat 120. It was a lot of fun to play with because everything was manual. You had to use a light meter because it didn't have an internal one, they weren't invented yet. I mostly guessed the exposures and I was pretty excited to see the results. Some times I was really wrong and sometimes I was really right. You also had to use a crank to wind your film. You didn't look through the camera like you do now, you had to look down and what you saw was a reversed prospective of what your lens pointed at. So you always had to think backwards. The pictures were vivid but it cost way too much to develop so I had to retire the camera and now it sits in my basement.

The reason why I mention that camera is because today I was googling my name, which is always so a lot of fun, and I stumbled upon a picture I took with that camera featured on treehugger.com. It was a picture of bicycle made by Jorg & Olif. I met the company's owner cruising around Robson street and I asked to take a picture of his bike.

I've also posted a few the pictures I took with that camera. I think one day it'll make a comeback. I better dust it off and get some 120 film. Maybe, just maybe, I'll see what it can do in Havana.

Tacky Baby Photos

So I've started doing baby portraits now which are a lot of fun and a great way to fill in my time between wedding seasons.

In December/08 I posted some tacky wedding photos. Pictures that I feel just aren't on par with what professional photographers should be doing. But believe it or not it continues to happen and people pay surprising amounts of money for photographers that don't produce creative shots.

I thought I'd post up some tacky pics of babies now. I've disguised the identity of the victims as well as the photography studio.

I'm gonna barf my eyes out if I see another photo turned into a pillow, towel, rug, dishrag, mudflap, flag, bathroom tile, wallpaper, mousepad, blanket or umbrella. I just don't get why someone would do that with a picture. Especially one of a babies head. Just imagine when that kid turns about 15 and there's a pillow on the couch with his face on it. Trauma!

This one screams sears portrait studio.

This photographer apparently went cheap on material so they just clipped and pasted onto a black background. Hence the jittery edges. Since they cut this picture out like this it looks like the mom is just holding appendages. I find it very creepy, especially considering the recent events on Canada's west coast.

Once again, the backdrops make my eyes bleed. I can't believe this is still happening. Who does this crap? And BTW I didn't copy and paste that kid on there, that's actually how the photographer wanted that to look.

Introducing Makayla

Makayla is an adorable little girl. She has these giant blue eyes that were mesmerized by my flash. She's going to break a lot of boy's hearts with those eyes one day.

I went to their house in Sherwood Park for these photos and it was fun to do baby pictures. The thing is about doing baby photos is that you can never really plan around their schedule but Makayla was a star. We started off with pictures of her with each parent, some by herself and then a few more sleeping pics. I don't think she even cried once the whole time!

I love taking tender pictures of each parent with their baby because I just know that those photos are timeless.
It's incredible how much love can be expressed in one image.

Makayla and I share one thing in common: a double chin. Hers is much cuter.

My new Ben Sherman's

I've been on a hunt to buy a pair of Ben Sherman shoes for a long time now. The stores in Edmonton just don't supply them. There's one place in West Edmonton Mall that does carry them but they only seem to order them in monster sizes and I've found them to be to totally non-cooperative in ordering any normal sizes. Yesterday I found one pair that I liked in my size. They're so friggin awesome I had to blog them.

Joel and Isabel's wedding day

Isabel and Joel's wedding was on December 20/08. I've never done a winter wedding before and when they first emailed me about their date I have to admit that I was a little nervous about using my gear in the winter. I've shot pictures in colder temp's of northern lights but I've never used my camera in a situation that would require going from indoors and then almost immediately outdoors again. Luckily, it all turned out great in the end and in retrospect I'd prefer going to a fun unique winter wedding over one in the heat of July.

First of all look at how squishy this dog is in his little tuxedo.

One of my favorite parts of a Chinese wedding is the Tea Ceremony. It's a photographer's gold-mine with lots of colours, people, and laughter.

We did indoor shots at the Rutherford house. Isabel requested a picture of her and Joel sitting in the antique bathtub. It turned out to be an adorable set of pictures.

It seemed like every guest at their wedding had some kind of talent.

Those that weren't aspiring photographers: were musicians. Even Joel serenaded his bride during the ceremony.

The reception was held at the Golden Rice Bowl restaurant on the south side of Edmonton were there was more singing, games and of course lots of fun.

It never ceases to amaze me how women will literally maul each other to catch the bouquet but men are terrified to even approach the garter.

All of a sudden every single man in the room has forgotten how to catch.

At the end of the evening Joel and Isabel along with their daughter Cassidy danced together. Very, very sweet.

Tacky wedding photos

A fun website to look through is www.tackyweddings.com There's just so many bad pictures out there that someone decided to devote an entire website. I thought I'd post some highlights up here for everyone to enjoy. The identity of the victims have been disguised.

None of these are pictures that I've taken. I guarantee it.

First of all, fake backdrops like this make my eyes bleed.

I promise my clients that I'll never use such a tacky effect. I imagine that this is what the world looks like if you have cataracts.

This is not something you want your mother-in-law to see:

Ok if any of my clients asks for one of these face purses I'm gonna puke. I'm sure you could get these at Wal-Mart. They also have photo towels and rugs. How gross! This can only be described as an abomination to both photography and fashion:

Uh. I just hate this photo and like every photographer does this.

Melanie & Adam's e-session

When Melanie first told me that they were having a cinema inspired wedding I nearly jumped out of my seat. I loved the idea right from the start. Adam and Melanie will be exchanging marriage vows on May 16, 2009. I can't wait. I'm going to have so much fun!

For their engagement session we started off at Adam's work were he proposed to his beautiful bride-to-be and then we headed out to a few of my favorite downtown spots. The weather was awful unfortunately. It wasn't cold but really slushy and messy but we managed to have a good time anyhow.

Then we took a break for lunch and did some more pictures in the City Centre mall. I'm so thankful for Cassandra at the Empire Theaters who allowed us do some fun shots in one of their theaters.

New Wedding-Joel & Isabel

Showing off some photoshop skills

People often ask me about how skilled I am with photoshop. I happen to be very proficient with the program but there are limits to what can reasonably be achieved within the digital darkroom. For example some colour manipulation is achievable but it's hard to do on skin tones. In this example it was easy for me to turn this Ferrari I saw today into cobalt blue from a vibrant red but it's a whole different story when your working with a person's face. That's why it's so critical for professional photographers such as myself to start off with the best raw image. Another thing I get asked frequently is if I can make someone look thinner on photoshop. I don't think it would convincing in most circumstances but I can make everybody else look fatter and that's way more fun.

Tony and Kathy's Wedding

This was my first military wedding and I had sooo much fun. The guys wore formal garb, there was a bagpiper and horsemen for the grand sendoff. Thank God the weather wasn't bad.

I had a thought in mind the day before their wedding to bring little green army men. I didn't know what I was going to use them for but I always take advantage of inspiration. I ended up using them for a shot of rings. Some people may look at the photo and think it's a metaphor for the struggles that people go through to maintain a relationship and external pressures on a marriage but please don't read into it too much. It was just meant to be a cute picture.

Chantal's studio session

I've already taken many many photos of Chantal but today was her first studio session. This was my chance to photograph her with my lights and backdrops etc. It gave me a lot more lighting control of course so it was a lot of fun. She's growing a bit more each day and she was awake and active for awhile. So far everytime I've visted with Ben and Juliana, Chantal has been asleep so it was fun to see some facial expression and she her eyes. Then she napped a bit on a blanket, a bit on a stuffed animal, a bit more on some sheepskin and then continued to sleep in her crib. She has some really amazing sleeping genes so I'm not surprised.

Brandon and Janine's engagement session

Brandon and Janine met me through Tre and Paola. Paola showed Janine the engagement photos I did for her and Tre and Janine gave me a call not long after. During their consultation appointment I asked Brandon and Janine what they like to do together. They couldn't come up with anything. It wasn't until they drove home past the airport that they remembered how much they enjoy travelling. Really? Who doesn't?

So I decided to incorporate travel into their engagment session. Planes, trains and automobiles. The only boat I could think of in Edmonton was the Santa Maria replica in West Edmonton Mall. Anybody who's seen it knows that this landmark just doesn't scream cool. It's pretty tacky and probably really dusty. So we skipped the boat idea.

The highlight of the day was definitely when we watched a very tired man fall asleep on a bench. I mean he actually fell off the bench. The strangest things happen downtown.

I also got a completly bogus parking ticket. Call me naive but I figured that since the gate was up that meant free parking on Sundays. Impark disagrees.

The coolest part of the whole day was at the end when we did the airplane photo. It was actually Janine's idea. They picked the spot and everything! It just goes to prove that being receptive to new ideas can be very rewarding.

Windy weekend

Unfortunately, I had to reschedule both of the sessions that I had booked for this weekend due to insane hurricane like winds Edmonton had this weekend. It's too bad because I was really looking forward to them all week. All I did this weekend was catch up on some editing and errands and I did some pictures of my neice who's growing like a weed. She's now over 5lbs! I also saw a really fun movie this weekend with Erin called Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Busy Monday

Today was a busy day of catching up for me. I put the finishing touches on Tammy & Ivor's wedding and got to work on David and Jenni's and a couple of other projects I have on the go. I just wanted to put up some updated picture of Chantal who is now at home safe and sound. I'm gonna set up some shots of her my studio gear when I get a chance.

Ivor and Tammy first contacted me this August looking for a photographer. Actually they were one of the first five couples to hire me and I'm so grateful. JAG Photography is now well on it's way. They got married at the beautiful Sacred Heart Church in Edmonton on Oct 11. This building has some amazing architecture and lots of stained=glass windows: a photographer's dream. Later we went down to the river valley for their formal shots and their reception was way on the westend. I got to debut my personal sepia toning at this wedding. I've been tweaking my sepias for nearly a year now and I'm finally happy enough with it to start using it at my weddings.

I'm a big fan of Brulak Design Studio cards. I picked up a few when I was in Indigo the other day. There designed in Edmonton and very creative. I'm meeting up with the designer next week to discuss a custom project.

Robin & Michaela's Engagement shoot.

Robin & Michaela are getting married next May. I had no trouble getting these two to be kissey kissey. They kept smooching and smooching. So affectionate. At the end of their shoot we got drenched in heavy rain. It was a good thing I decided to do the set in the order we did. Afterwards we all went for a really tastey lunch on Whyte Ave.

Heidi is a good friend of mine from my days at NAIT. She helped me study so much so I agreed to do some pictures for her at the reception. It was really nice to catch up with Andrea, Becky and Shanda and to see Marci again briefly. Congrats Heidi & Kelly.

John & Prudence's Wedding

There's only one way to descibe these two. Adorable. This was my first Chinese wedding and I really enjoyed all the ceremonies. Almost the only part that was in English was the speech from THE best man (very funny) but I kept up fine. They played lots of games that I'm sure were designed to tease just the guys.
